This week we light the candle of Bethlehem, or the candle of peace.  With the coming of Christ, the Prince of Peace, comes our spiritual peace.

As you go through this week, think about the things that give you peace in your life.  Is Christ your source of peace?  Or do you look to other things to bring you peace?  Comfort, financial security, job/work, relationships, and even religion are all poor substitutes for the ultimate peace that only Christ can give.

As Christians, we can even seek peace in the things that Christ gives us, rather than finding peace in Christ alone.

For reflection and preparation for the second week of Advent:

  1. Find some verses that describe the peace we have in Christ and share them with someone else this week.
  2. What songs remind you of the peace that Christ offers in Himself?  Take some time to listen to those this week as you prepare your heart for Christmas.
  3. Through what circumstances have you experienced the peace of Christ, peace that could only come from Him despite what was happening?

One of my favorite verses about peace is Philippians 4:6-7:

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

There is a peace beyond understanding that can only come from Christ and from giving everything to Him in prayer, being thankful in our circumstance (even though we may not be thankful for it.)

When we lean on God in prayer and have an attitude of thankfulness, the peace of God will stand guard in our hearts.  It is the peace that transcends not only our circumstances, but also our understanding.  People will look at you and marvel at what God is doing in your life because these peace comes not from you, but from God alone.

May you light the advent candle of peace this week in your life.  May you have a peace-filled week filled with prayer and thanksgiving – whatever your circumstance.
